Google offers not to use Fitbit health data to ease EU concerns

Alphabet Inc.’s Google (GOOGL) said on Monday that it would not use Fitbit Inc.’s (FIT) health data to target advertisements in an attempt to address the European Union’s antitrust concerns about its proposed acquisition deal worth $2.1 billion.

“This deal is about devices, not data. We appreciate the opportunity to work with the European Commission on an approach that safeguards consumers’ expectations that Fitbit device data won’t be used for advertising,” Google said in an email.

Google announced its plans to acquire the fitness tracker company last November 2019.

The U.S. technology company said that the deal with Fitbit would be a great help to take on market leaders like Apple (AAPL), Huawei, Xiaomi (XIACF), and Samsung (.005930) in the fitness tracking and smartwatch market.

Fitbit’s shares rose by 1% while Alphabet’s Class A stocks went up by 13% on late trading.
