Information about the company RioTinto
Founded back in 1873, Rio Tinto is one of the largest mining corporations in the world. The Anglo-Australian company was formed when several investors purchased a mine in Huelva from the Spanish government. Rio Tinto has expanded its mining operations considerably over the last several decades to include aluminium, copper, titanium, uranium and iron ore. Rio Tinto operations are located primarily in Australia and Canada.
Rio Tinto, stock symbol RIO, is a dual-listed company, available on the London Stock Exchange and the Australian Securities Exchange. RIO stock is part of two indices: FTSE 100 Index and S&P/ASX 200. Rio Tinto also has American Depository Shares that are listed on the NYSE.
Rio Tinto may have started its mining operations in Huelva in 1873, but it was certainly not the first to extract its riches. Iberians and Tartessians were mining silver and gold from the mine as far back as 3000 BC. They were followed by the Greeks, Romans, and Moors. Huelva was forgotten until 1556 when it was rediscovered by the Spanish government.
