UPS hires 100,000 seasonal workers for the holiday rush
On Wednesday, United Parcel Service Inc. (UPS.N) announced that it plans to hire more than 100,000 extra workers for the winter holiday season to help handle an increase in packages. The logistics company said that retailers are stretching out to avoid delivery network traffic due to the overwhelming amount of orders from online shopping.
According to UPS, it expects this year’s peak season to extend from October 2020 to January 2021 as retailers prepare for their kickoffs. The world’s largest package delivery company said that it would hire the same number of seasonal holiday helpers as last year.
Other retail companies such as Target (TGT.N), Best Buy (BBY.O), and Kohl’s (KSS.N) moved their winter holiday promotions up to as early as October 2020. Walmart (WMT.N), on the other hand, announced that it would close all of its stores on Thanksgiving.
According to the United States Department of Labor, the country’s unemployment rate was down by 8.4% last month due to the coronavirus outbreak.
