Trump demands Congress to give $25 billion in cash assistance for American airlines
On Tuesday, United States President Donald Trump said that the Congress should provide new payroll assistance worth $25 billion to U.S. passenger airlines that furloughed thousands of its employees as the global travel demand was severely affected by the coronavirus outbreak.
“IMMEDIATELY Approve 25 Billion Dollars for Airline Payroll Support… I will sign it now!” Trump said in a tweet.
Trump added that Congress could tap its unused funds from prior coronavirus relief to fund airlines and a separate program for small businesses.
Last week, American Airlines (AAL.O) and United Airlines (UAL.O) laid off 40% of its workforce or almost 32,000 employees.
On Wednesday, American Airlines ended its aircraft services to eleven smaller U.S. airports after the Congress failed to approve additional aid.
