Sony to partner with Microsoft for enhanced imaging chip

Sony Corp. has partnered with Microsoft Corporation with plans to embed artificial intelligence capabilities into its latest imaging chip.

The enhanced chip will have its own built-in processor and memory which allows for video analysis with artificial intelligence. This would be similar to Microsoft’s Azure, but with the use of a faster, simpler, and more secure method.

The chip could be potentially used in the retails and logistics sectors where warehouse and factory automation could be optimized. In addition, it could be used for smart cars to assess their drivers and the environment.

With rising concerns regarding surveillance, the chip will be able to provide more privacy-conscious monitoring. It will have the ability to analyze the video and provide metadata without sending data to remote servers. This would reduce a hackers’ ability to intercept videos or images deemed sensitive.

In light of the news, Sony’s shares in Japan gained 4.28% to ¥6971 ($64.98) at 1:12 AM ET (6:12 AM GMT).
