Japan sought reconfirmation from US for no additional tariffs on auto exports
Japan plans to reconfirm that Washington would not impose additional tariffs on Japanese automobiles and auto parts, Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi said on Tuesday after the final stages of trade talks with the United States.
U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States had reached initial trade agreements with Japan on tariff barriers and digital trade. The announcement was still left unclear as to whether Trump had agreed not to impose national security tariffs on Japanese exports such as vehicles and auto parts. Avoiding the “Section 232” tariffs which went up to 25% was a motivating factor for Tokyo in negotiating with Washington on trade.
