Australia’s Qantas Airways will resume domestic flights but without social distancing

Qantas Airways Ltd.’s Chief Executive Officer Alan Joyce stated on Tuesday that the company would resume its operations with 40-50% of its domestic flights in July if the government would ease travel restrictions.

The Australian airline would offer cheap flights and flexible fares to stimulate travel demand, but without social distancing measures.

Starting June 12, Qantas passengers will wear face masks during flights and be encouraged to use cleaning wipes to ensure travel safety. Passengers will also be asked to limit movement around the cabin once seated.

The company aims to give passengers peace of mind amid the virus outbreak, but will not leave middle seats empty.

“Social distancing on an aircraft isn’t practical the way it is on the ground, and given the low transmission risk on board, we don’t believe it’s necessary in order to be safe. The extra measures we’re putting place will reduce the risk even further,” the Qantas Airways CEO stated in an interview with the media.

Qantas Airways added hand sanitizing stations at departure gates and included enhanced aircraft cleaning. Simplified service and catering will be provided to minimize touchpoints for crew and passengers.
